Rep. Figures files bill to name post office in honor of Tuskegee Airmen

November 11, 2025

U.S. Representative Shomari Figures, D-Ala., introduced bipartisan legislation today to recognize the Tuskegee Airmen in honor of Veterans Day.

The bill introduced by Figures would designate the U.S. Postal Service facility at 401 North Elm Street in Tuskegee as the “Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office.”

“Today, on my first Veterans Day in Congress, I want to wish a happy Veterans Day to all the men and women who have ever put on the uniform in defense and protection of the United States of America,” Figures said in a written statement.

“You are the reason we enjoy the rights, privileges, and freedoms that we do in this country. On today and every day, I want to thank you for the commitment and courage you have shown throughout your careers to make this a better nation,” the representative continued. “I also want to thank your families, because I know when servicemembers serve, their families do too.”

The legislation has received endorsements from each of Alabama’s seven representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated.

Figures expressed hope that the bill would bring attention to the legacy and impact of the first group of African American pilots and support crews to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, who trained at Tuskegee Army Airfield.

“Every person who enters the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office will be reminded of their courage, sacrifice, and service to our country,” Figures’ office wrote.

“Designating the Tuskegee Post Office as the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office is a meaningful way to honor the legacy of these trailblazing heroes, and I’m proud to do this on my first Veterans Day with the full support of Alabama’s congressional delegation,” the representative said.

“The Tuskegee Airmen, whom I especially honor on my first Veterans Day, not only broke barriers in our armed forces but also inspired generations of Americans to serve with courage, integrity, and pride,” Figures added. “This recognition ensures that their sacrifice, bravery, and historic contributions to our nation will never be forgotten.”

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for consideration.

Figures’ office highlighted additional bills the representative has co-sponsored aimed at supporting veterans.

This includes the Pay Federal Workers and Servicemembers Act, which would grant unpaid federal workers access to unemployment benefits during government shutdowns alongside the Pay Our Military Act and the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act to ensure servicemembers and associated contractors continue to receive pay during shutdowns.

Figures has also co-sponsored a resolution to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 761st Tank Battalion, the first Black soldiers to serve in a war in a U.S. armored unit.

The representative’s office also pointed to his support for an amendment to the Small Businesses Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., and U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., which would allow children of service-disabled veterans who own small businesses to temporarily inherit ownership of the business.

Other bills highlighted by Figures’ officials include: the Protect Veteran Jobs Act, the Major Richard Star Act, the Love Lives On Act, the Stop Troubling Retroactive Invoices for Veteran Expenses Act, the Caring for Survivors Act of 2025, the Governing Unaccredited Representatives Defrauding VA Benefits Act, the Every Veteran Housed Act and the End Veteran Homelessness Act of 2025.
