Figures Commemorates 61st Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) issued the following statement to commemorate the 61st Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: “Sixty-one years ago, the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 began a new chapter of hope and opportunity for Black Americans after generations of discrimination and legal segregation. Despite this landmark law, we are witnessing the broadest assault on civil rights that we have seen in more than a century. From slashing essential enforcement personnel to closing civil rights offices, the Trump Administration is systematically dismantling our efforts to root out overt and covert discrimination across the country. As the representative of the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, Montgomery, Alabama, I will always challenge these attacks and remain committed to demanding full and equal justice for all."
