Figures Joins Rep. Terri Sewell, House Democrats to Introduce the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

March 5, 2025

WASHINGTON – Ahead of the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) joined Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) and House Democrats to introduce H.R. 14, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill would restore and modernize protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) and prevent states with a history of voter discrimination from erecting new barriers to the ballot box.

“The right to vote is one of our most sacred rights as Americans and the foundation of our democracy,” said Rep. Figures. “The district I represent includes the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery, Alabama, which ultimately led to the Voting Rights Act. This pivotal piece of legislation is the reason I, and so many of my colleagues are able to sit in Congress today. I will always stand up for voting rights and do everything I can to protect the sacrifices that were made by Congressman John Lewis and so many others. I am proud to stand with my colleagues to introduce this bill to ensure every eligible voter can vote and have their vote counted.”
