House Passes Figures’ Bipartisan Bill to Rename Post Office Honoring Tuskegee Airmen |
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Shomari C. Figures’ bipartisan bill to rename a post office located in Tuskegee after the Tuskegee Airmen passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a voice vote. “The Tuskegee Airmen are among the most consequential and impactful service members in our nation’s history,” said Figures. “They were heroes who were instrumental to the Allied victory in World War II and helped to pave the way for the desegregation of the United States military. Renaming this post office is a meaningful way of honoring their legacy, and I will continue working in Congress to ensure that the Tuskegee Airmen receive the recognition that they rightly deserve.” The Tuskegee Airmen were composed of African American pilots and support personnel who trained at Moton Field and Tuskegee Army Airfield and fought bravely during World War II, making them the first African American military aviators in our Armed Forces. They not only defended our nation and the freedom of those abroad but also overcame racial barriers at home trailblazing a path for generations of future service members and military leaders. Congressman Figures’ bill would designate the Tuskegee Post Office at 401 North Elm Street as the “Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office.” This legislation was cosponsored by all members of the Alabama House Delegation. Congressman Figures has also introduced the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Act, a bipartisan bill to establish a memorial in Washington, DC, honoring the Tuskegee Airmen. This bill is also cosponsored by the entire Alabama House Delegation and 43 additional members of Congress. |
