WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) issued the following statement on the passing of Alexis Herman:
“Today, I was saddened to learn of the death of a true hometown hero, legendary trailblazer, family friend, and mentor: Alexis Herman.
WASHINGTON – This week, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) marked 100 days since he was sworn in as a member of the 119th Congress. He has worked to push for policies that will improve the lives of people in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, while also fighting back on the Trump Administration’s harmful decisions that will negatively impact the lives of his constituents.
It was a packed house that offered a warm greeting for new District 2 congressman Shomari Figures, at a time when many Capitol Hill lawmakers are getting less than warm receptions from their constituents, some struggling with recent Trump administration job and budget cuts.
"I think they're here because people are concerned about what's going on,” says Figures. “I think people want to know what's going on in Washington, what we see, and I think people want to know what we're doing in Washington to keep their interests first in the city and in Mobile County."

His mother -- longtime State Senator Vivian Figures introduced him -- calling it a “proud mom” moment.
The Democratic Congressman Figures was elected to represent Alabama’s newly-redrawn 2nd Congressional District in November. Figures said he was humbled by the turnout.

WASHINGTON – Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) and Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) introduced legislation, the Civil Rights Landmarks Protection Act, to protect civil rights landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places.

“A traditional continuing resolution would fund the government at the current levels. This continuing resolution does not do that. I voted against this bill because it jeopardizes the well-being of our seniors, veterans and families, with no assurances that President Trump won’t freeze this funding again.
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) spoke on the House Floor to condemn the Trump Administration’s efforts to sell the historic Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station which houses the Freedom Rides Museum. This museum honors the legacy of John Lewis and other young civil rights activists who were nearly killed at the Montgomery bus station while trying to exercise their constitutional rights.
WASHINGTON – Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) and Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) sent a letter today calling for the immediate removal of the Freedom Rides Museum from the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) list of properties slated for sale.
